Message The turbos on those cars were so small that the stock airbox flowed enough for them to perform well.
The filter just ended up sucking up the hot air from the engine bay and made the car run like crap. The stock airbox, like that gtr, had a snorkel that got fed air from outside the bay.

So I think it has a lot to do with how much air is required and if the stock filter can flow well enough to supply it and where it's getting the air from.

The stock piping seems pretty restrictive. Also, most people upgrading aren't running stock turbos, so the extra flow is quite benifital.
